Concentration Camp Conference
22-24 September 2010
AIM:
To commemorate the Concentration Camp system that was initiated during the Anglo-Boer War in 1900 (110-years ago) and to identify different role players in the conserving and maintaining of Concentration Camp sites and cemeteries.
THEMES:
22 September 2010: This day is about the history of the camps and the suffering of their inhabitants. On this day a Bethulie Concentration Camp Memorial will also be unveiled.
23 September 2010: This day is about the conservation and maintenance of the Concentration Camp sites and cemeteries in South Africa at present and the initiating of a plan of action whereby different institutions can participate in conserving this important heritage.
24 September 2010: Commemorative service and wreath laying.
SPEAKERS:
22 September 2010: Well known historians knowledgeable on this particular subject such as Prof. Fransjohan Pretorius (UP)and Dr. Elizabeth van Heyningen (UCT).
23 September 2010: Representatives from Heritage Institutions such as the Heritage Foundation and SAHRA.
