The Black Concentration Camps of the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902
Cost / Koste: R540 (including postage) or R485 at Museum Reception
Order form / Bestelvorm
Many years in the making, the late Stowell Kessler's long-awaited publication is entitled The black concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. The book is published by the War Museum of the Boer Republics, through a sponsorship, inter alia, by the National Heritage Council (NHC). The official launch will be later in the year. Kessler's book will have an important impact on South African historical studies. He found that while Boer victims of the British concentration camps had, rightly, never been forgotten, the thousands of black victims had, by contrast, slid into complete anonymity.
The black concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 is a high quality quarto hardcover book with dust jacket. It consists of over 350 pages, two maps (one inset) and over 100 high quality photographs, many of them never before published.

Information on the author, Rev. Stowell Kessler:
The Rev. Stowell Kessler was an American Presbyterian church minister. He was born in New York State in 1934 and later served congregations in Nebraska and Wisconsin. He served in the Korean War between 1952 and September 1953, helping to clear minefields after the war ended. In the U.S. he was a member of various civil rights movements. During his civil rights career he was tortured in a Mississippi jail and shocked with cattle prods in a Georgia prison. He shared prison cells with blacks and whites during his career as an activist. He became interested in South African history in the 1970’s, when this country was beginning to attract international condemnation due to apartheid. He completed his Master’s thesis at Princeton Theological Seminary in June 1986. The subject was “The suffering Afrikaners and their civil religion: The Theological Roots of Apartheid.” Rev. Kessler was fundamentally opposed to the policy of apartheid all his life. He came to live permanently in South Africa in 1994. In 1989 he trained people in S.A. in non-violent disobedience. He completed his doctorate (the basis for this book) at the University of Cape Town in 2002, and received a Ph.D. Rev. Kessler died in 2007.
